In 1977, Dade County, Florida, passed an ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. She led a successful and highly publicized campaign to repeal the ordinance "Save Our Children" was her groups name. The campaign was based on conservative religious beliefs and common morals .They perceived the threat of homosexual indoctrination and recruitment of children as well as the risks of child molestation.
What these people really want, hidden behind obscure legal phrases, is the legal right to propose to our children that theirs is an acceptable alternate way of life. [...] I will lead such a crusade to stop it as this country has not seen before.
Save Our Children undertook a campaign against the Gay Agenda that became nationwide in scope.
Anita Bryant during the course of the campaign is quoted as saying As a mother,
I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children.
If gays are granted rights, next we'll have to give rights to prostitutes and to people who sleep with St. Bernards
Obviously Mrs. Bryant lacked ambassadorial eloquence and was not schooled in the effective use of language, but her concepts were correct and time has proven them out.
